I Ching for Beginners remains one of my best-received projects of all time. It’s still in print after all these years, and continues to sell well and receive rave reviews on Amazon.com.
My interest in divination as a means of brainstorming options for action began when I stumbled on the Chinese oracle book, the I Ching, or Book of Changes. When friends found the text difficult to read and understand, I researched the ancient manuscript and wrote a paraphrase of its text that would be easier for modern audiences to read and apply. (I even created a new way to select a randomized passage that many now prefer over older, more traditional approaches.)
Some early critics of the book expressed dismay over the idea of having an ancient text rendered “less poetic” in order to be more accessible … but over time, many of these dissenting voices returned to praise this book, teaching me to have more faith in my ideas (and to take early criticisms with a grain of salt).
Writing this book taught me a great deal about making obscure source material more accessible to a general audience … while still remaining true to the spirit and intent of the original work.
More than a decade after its first edition, this book is still print and available on Amazon.com.
